How to Play Word Connect

Word Connect is a free daily word-grouping puzzle inspired by the classic categories challenge format. Each day, sixteen words appear on your screen. Your task: sort them into four groups of four, each linked by a hidden theme.

HOW TO PLAY

Tap or click four words you believe share a connection, then press Submit. A correct guess reveals the group in colour — Yellow for the easiest connection, through Green and Blue, up to Purple for the trickiest. You have four mistakes before the puzzle ends, so choose carefully.

THE COLOUR SYSTEM

Yellow groups are the most direct — common categories most players spot immediately. Green requires a step of lateral thinking. Blue demands niche knowledge or wordplay awareness. Purple connections often hinge on a second meaning, a prefix or suffix pattern, or a phrase completion that only becomes obvious after the other groups have cleared the board.

ONE-AWAY ALERTS

If three of your four selected words belong to the same group, the board gently nudges you: "One away!" This hint costs you nothing — it is an invitation to swap one word and try again. It counts as a mistake if you proceed unchanged.

DAILY STREAK

Every day you complete the puzzle — whether you solve all four groups or exhaust your mistakes — your streak grows. Missing a day resets it. Your best streak is always saved. Many players find the streak the most compelling reason to return every morning.

SHARING YOUR RESULT

After the puzzle, copy your emoji grid and paste it anywhere — group chats, social media, a text to a friend. The coloured squares show which group each word in your guess belonged to, so onlookers can reconstruct your reasoning without spoilers.

Every puzzle in the rotation was authored specifically for Word Connect. The 30-puzzle bank cycles by daily date seed, meaning you will see new puzzles for a full month before encountering a repeat. New puzzles are added regularly.

How many guesses do I get in Word Connect?

You have four mistakes allowed before the puzzle ends. Each incorrect group submission counts as one mistake, displayed as a lost heart. Use the one-away hint to help you narrow down tricky groups before committing.

Is the puzzle the same for everyone today?

Yes. Today's puzzle is seeded from today's calendar date, so every player worldwide sees the same 16 words. The display order of tiles is shuffled individually so the layout differs, but the four groups are identical.

What does the one-away message mean?

One-away means exactly three of your four selected words belong to the same correct group. Swap one word and try again. The message appears automatically — you don't need to request it.

Can I shuffle the tiles?

Yes. Tap the Shuffle button at any time to rearrange the remaining tiles. Sometimes seeing words in a different spatial arrangement helps you spot a hidden connection. Shuffling never counts as a mistake.

Does playing Word Connect cost anything?
